All right!! Well, now that you've gone through the basic structures of the face, let's give it a try! Because I think you can now easily step your way through drawing a traditional angle, like full-frontal, I decided to add a little twist by showing you how to draw a three-quarter view from a slight bird's-eye-view - that way we can make use of our two ovals for the head.
Step One
First let's create a head by using two ovals, like we learned. One is the face, and one help create the shape for the top of the skull.
After that, I draw the three lines that cut the face into halves. Click here for a color-coded guide to the two steps above.
I want this character to be smiling, so after I draw the ovals, I add the facial curves for the forehead, the little groove where the eye rests, and the cheek. Notice the roundness in the cheeks...because our character is smiling her cheeks are rounder than normal, her mouth will be wider and her eyes will be pushed upwards.
Step Two
Ok!! Time to add in some little sketchy markers so you know where to detail in the eyes, nose and mouth. Little football shapes will do for the eyes, a mere line or two for the nose and mouth. This is just so you know where they go and can stand back and look at it, to make sure you're comfortable with the proportions. Remember, we're looking at the face from an aerial view, so the tops of things (the top of the head, nose and lips) are slightly emphasized.
Here's a tricky part: the eyes are going to be distorted in that the bottom part is more rounded out. The roundness of the eyeballs cause the flesh around your eye socket to 'puff out' because they're in direct contact with your eyeball. Consequently, a view from above will emphasize that roundness in the area that grows the lower eyelashes. Whenever you are confronted with a new angle, position or lighting source, grab that mirror and study yourself in the same position you wish to draw. I can't stress that enough, especially if you're like me and are too lazy/poor to consult art books most of the time...
